From stretched savanna plains to the lush rainforests with chimpanzees & mountain gorillas, and from the bustling capital Kigali to the idyllic Lake Kivu: Rwanda has it all! The “Land of a Thousand Hills” has been impressively restored after a turbulent history and is ready to be discovered.
Rwanda owes the nickname ‘Le pays des Mille Collines’, or the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’, to its beautiful landscape. Everywhere there are rolling hills with lush tea plantations, tropical rainforest and picturesque Rwandan villages. This is Africa at its best! The northern Volcanoes National Park guarantees adventurous treks on the volcanoes and encounters with the endangered mountain gorillas & golden monkeys. On the vast Lake Kivu you will experience the local fishing life and breathtaking sunsets. Track chimpanzees in the tropical Nyungwe Forest or take walks between the bright green tea plantations. In the eastern Akagera National Park you might spot the big 5 during the jeep safari! Besides its rich nature and wildlife features, there will also be time to reflect on the turbulent Rwandan history.
Volcanoes National Park, home to the Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys, is Africa’s oldest National Park. The park comprises five of the eight Virunga Mountain volcanoes and covers 160 km² of lush rainforest.
Akagera National Park is one of the oldest in Africa, and the biggest in Rwanda. It’s great for traditional game drives, as well as exploring the area on foot allowing a close-up with nature. The National Park counts 10 lakes, over 500 species of birds, and over 8,000 large animals to stop on your safari.
Lake Kivu is part of the Albertine Rift Valley and one of the African Great Lakes. It is surrounded by mountains and unique flora and fauna. One of the best ways to explore the lake, is through the famous 227km long ‘Congo Nile Trail’. The trail can be explored on foot, by mountain bike, by kayak on the lake or a combination of all. A great adventure for nature lovers, as well as an introduction to Rwanda’s local life along the trail.

Rwanda is a great destination to visit any time of the year. Low season is considered to be from October to May, and the high season is from June to September. Regarding weather, it is assumed that Rwanda has a more rain during the low season, and that it is more dry during the high season. In recent years, however, we find that the seasons are not very reliable anymore, as rainfall can be experienced during ‘dry season’, and there can be dry periods during a ‘rainy season’. When visiting Rwanda, primate walks are for most the highlight of their tour, done in rainforest habitats. Rainforests are, by default, very wet and one can’t avoid rain completely.
It is important to know that in the high season, gorilla tracking permits sell out very quickly. Especially when traveling in July or August. We advise to secure your permits at least 6 months in advance. The same goes for Rwanda’s popular high-end lodges, which are often fully booked far in advance.
