With its incredible diversity of nature, culture and wildlife, Uganda is the perfect destination for an authentic adventure experience.
Its landscapes range from lush rainforests and volcanic crater lakes to vast savanna plains, from snow-capped mountain ranges to waterfalls and the source of the mighty river Nile. Professionally guided walks and hikes, cycling and motorbike trips are the best way to actively explore the beautiful natural scenery.
Uganda’s tourism sector is currently majorly focussed on primate-tracking activities, making the south-western region a travelers’ center of attention. But, with its incredible diversity of nature, culture and wildlife, Uganda is the perfect destination for authentic adventures – beyond primates. With over 45 tribes, Uganda as well presents a rich cultural diversity and variety in languages and dialects, foods, dressing, customs and beliefs. Unique and responsibly developed activities allow genuine interaction with communities and create unforgettable immersive experiences. Developing and promoting Uganda as an adventure travel destination is one of our approaches to work towards a more inclusive destination with opportunities to participate in and to earn revenue from tourism activities for all regions in Uganda.
A knowledgeable, experienced tour guide is key to an unforgettable travel experience. Matoke Tours offers professionally guided full-package adventure itineraries within East Africa, with Uganda being the heart of our operations.
In 2019, we formalized our cooperation with partners from the tourism industry to further develop Uganda as an adventure tourism destination. Multi-day hiking and cycling trails and cultural activities have been developed and product trainings conducted.
Matoke Tours has introduced a specialist training program for Adventure Travel Guides. In 7 intensive course trainings over the course of 3 years, qualified tour guides will gain in-depth knowledge about adventure travel as well as further develop their soft-skills, such as high-level customer service, planning and intercultural communication.
Within our program, a particular focus will be on female tour guides. Societal and economical barriers often make it impossible for women to consider a career in tour guiding in Uganda. To make a first step towards a change in perception, Matoke Tours actively reaches out to interested women to encourage participation in trainings. In addition, we do include additional training modules like defensive driving or safety and security and mentorship programs for female guides.
